Start Your Own Photography Business

Do you love taking pictures? Do friends and family ask you to bring your camera along to gatherings? Maybe you’ve even photographed a wedding or two. Here are some things to consider if you are thinking about making money with your camera.

Pick a Niche

There are a lot of photographers out there, so as with any small business, it’s easier to get into the field if you have a niche market like alternative energy photography or taking pictures at concerts. You can start with senior year photos and weddings, but there is less competition if you choose something unusual. Taking pet portraits is a niche market and if you like animals, it might work for you.

Upgrade Your Equipment

While you probably don’t need the top of the line set up to start your business, you need to make sure you can take high-quality pictures that people will pay for. In addition to a camera, don’t forget flashes, lenses, batteries, SD cards, and photo editing software. If you will be doing portraits you will also need a good printer, quality photo paper and packaging to send the photos to clients. You may also need lights and filters in a studio set up, too. Photography equipment is expensive, although you can get many items used.

Business Paperwork

Draw up a business plan and research what you will need to do to get it registered. Decide if you will do business under your name or create a separate one. Sign up for a tax number.

Marketing

The key to success in any business is getting your name out there. Create marketing materials and distribute them both physically and online. Setting up accounts on social media is a good way to market your business, as well.

It takes work to turn a hobby like photography into a business. But it is worthwhile and rewarding in the long run.
